Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy Begins Prison Sentence in Historic Case

PARIS – Nicolas Sarkozy, the former President of France, was taken into custody on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, to begin a five-year prison sentence. The incarceration follows his recent conviction for criminal conspiracy related to the illicit financing of his 2007 presidential campaign by the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Sarkozy was arrested at his residence in Paris's 16th arrondissement and transferred to the Paris Santé prison. This event marks a significant moment in modern French history, making him the first president of the Fifth Republic to be imprisoned.

The former head of state arrived at the prison at approximately 9:45 a.m. local time. According to sources familiar with the prison's protocols, Sarkozy will be held under heightened security measures, including solitary confinement, due to his public profile. He is expected to be housed in a standard cell.

While in detention, Sarkozy will be afforded certain privileges distinct from the general prison population. These include the authorization for three supervised visits per week, access to a monitored telephone with a limited list of pre-approved numbers, and solitary exercise periods. He will also retain the ability to purchase personal items from a prison catalog.

Shortly after his detention began, Sarkozy’s legal team filed a formal request for his release pending an appeal. The relevant court is expected to rule on the petition within the next two months.

A small group of supporters, including his wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, and other close associates, were present during the arrest at his home. Reports from his inner circle suggest the former president intends to use his time in prison to write about his experiences.
