US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were swiftly evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night after gunshots were reported near the venue. Authorities later confirmed that no fatalities or serious injuries occurred, and a suspect is now in custody.

The United States Secret Service stated that the situation was contained quickly. In a brief address afterward, President Trump described the incident as shocking but expressed relief that security personnel acted decisively.

According to the president, the suspect attempted to breach a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton hotel while armed. A Secret Service agent was reportedly shot at close range but was protected by body armor and did not sustain life-threatening injuries. Trump noted that he had personally spoken with the officer, describing him as being in strong spirits.

The president also revealed that he initially wished for the event to continue after the suspect’s arrest, but security protocols required its suspension. He assured that the dinner would be rescheduled on a larger scale.

Earlier, Trump shared images and video footage on social media showing the suspect being apprehended. The visuals appeared to show a man restrained on the ground, as well as footage of an individual running past security before being pursued.

Law enforcement officials have identified the suspect as a 31-year-old man from California. Authorities say he was heavily armed, carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. He is expected to face several charges, including the use of a firearm during a violent crime and assault on federal officers. Investigators are currently executing search warrants linked to the case, while the motive remains unclear.

The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, a longstanding tradition dating back to 1921, was underway when the incident occurred. Guests reported confusion and panic as the sound of gunfire spread through the venue. Security teams quickly escorted senior officials, including cabinet members, to safety, while others remained inside under lockdown.

Despite the disruption, officials have indicated there is no ongoing threat to the public. Further updates are expected as investigations continue.
